A spectrum of deep reds slowly transitioning into black is featured in this Japanese Raku vase. The vase has an abstract motif on one side, while its shape has organic irregularities owing to it being entirely hand-moulded, without use of a potter's wheel. Raku is the Japanese word for comfort, and true to its name, it puts observers at ease with its ethos of warmth and craftsmanship.

    Process of Making

    Raw earthen kneaded clay is Wheel Thrown to create desired moulds which is then Bisque Fired & glazed. The pot is then heated in a kiln at 982o C. This tremendous heat shock causes the pot to explode, initiating immediate metamorphosis. At this point, the pot is red hot & the melting glaze coats it. The glowing mass is then removed from the kiln using tongs. The change in temperature for the pot, results in highly prized cracks of traditional Raku pottery....
