It is believed that Goddess Panthobi (also known as Annapurna and Parvati) fed the whole world along with her consort Shiva, who was begging for food on account of a whim created by her. To overcome this situation goddess Annapurna created a bowl which would provide endless food and it is believed that the bowl was made up of serpentine stone which is the base material for Longpi Pottery.

    Process of Making

    At First, the weathered rock(clay) and serpentine rock, which according to locals, are available at Longpi only, are crushed to a powder and mixed with water in a ratio of 5:3 to form a clay-like consistency. The dull-brown mixture is kneaded the entire day and flattened on a wooden board for the initial slab work. Uniquely, Longpi pots are not crafted on a potter’s wheel.
